Columbia University Emeritus Professor Hugh Patrick
Professor Hugh Patrick came all the way to the Oshima Island to visit Oshima Shipbuilding Co. on May 26 and 27. Professor Hugh Patrick is a director of the center on Japanese Economy and Business of Columbia University and is a leading expert in academia about the research of Japanese economy and businesses.

On May 26, Professor Hugh Patrick went on a shipyard tour of Oshima Shipbuilding Co., and the professor attended a presentation given by shipyard’s directors, and a post-meeting party held in honor of the professor at the Olive Bay Hotel with it in mind that such a getting together might help him keep abreast of Oshima Shipbuilding Co.

On the morning of May 27, the professor attended another presentation given by the Design and Production teams and made a physical inspection on working sites to receive briefings from several section heads.

Additionally, the professor called at Osaki Junior High located in the Oshima Island and talked to students in a convincing way about the importance of English language is, difference between American and Japanese students and also the history of the United States. Some of the students were positive to make questions to the professor during the lecture, which would be of great value to them. After coming back from the lecture, the professor visited the affiliates of Oshima Shipbuilding Co., observed a naming ceremony and took an onboard tour of the ship the naming ceremony was held for.
The professor seemed to be fully satisfied with his visit to the Oshima Island.

He finished all his schedules, saying, "Oshima shipyard is an excellent one and won’t take a long time to become widely known throughout the world.” Particular thanks must go to professor Patrick who made such reference to our company.
